¿What are epoxy floors?
Definition:
Epoxy systems are two-component polymeric coatings that are mixed before application
and react exothermically, the mixture goes from a liquid to a solid state in a short time.
Resin and a Hardener are the components, the resin can be transparent or pigmented and
Hardener is generally amber in color.
Applications:
It can be applied on floors and walls mainly in the commercial part: Food Industry, Kitchens
and Dining Rooms, Laboratories, Schools, Hospitals and Clinics, Hotels, Manufacturing
Plants, Restaurants, Warehouses or Hangars for Aircraft and automotive workshops,
among others. In the residential part: decorative floors, garages, terraces and patios.
Applications:
Concrete or cement surfaces, cast granite, stoneware, ceramic, wood or metal tiles.
Some characteristics of epoxy floors:

Limitations
Advantage
– It strongly adheres to cement by capillarity, becoming an integral part of the surface.
– It has excellent antimicrobial properties that protects and prevents the reproduction of bacteria, fungi, mold on floors and walls.
– Resists and protects the surface from spills of strong grease, oil, compression, traction, impact and bending. In general, high mechanical and chemical resistance. It should be mentioned that they are not indestructible.
– Great ease of cleaning by daily use of cleaning products with soap to maintain the shine.
– Monolithic application without seams or joints, in short periods of time, high gloss and a variety of colors with pigments, textures and non-slip.
Profits
– Better “Cost-Benefit” ratio, due to its long useful life and lower maintenance costs.
– One-off repairs are carried out in a very short time without the need to stop the production process of the companies.
– Functional, durable and easy to maintain, epoxy coatings are a go-to solution for many commercial, industrial and residential customers.
– Durability, stain resistant, appearance, safety, easy maintenance.
– Anti-slip, Antimicrobial for floors and decorative coatings.
Limitations
– UV rays can change the color of the material.
– Applications over new concrete floors 28 days after casting or the next day with a vapor barrier.
– Do not apply with compressed air equipment.
– When the two components are mixed, the application time is short, because it solidifies quickly.
– The surface where the epoxy coating will be applied must be free of grease, fuel, dust, contaminants and completely dry, also porous enough to penetrate the substrate.

Components of the epoxy system
The first step is an inspection of the current conditions of the floor, with this it is determined what type of surface preparation needs to be done and which coating system is the most indicated, an absorption test can also be done.
Types of epoxy floor preparation
- Mechanical Preparation: It is the activity that allows to make a better bonding bridge of the surface so that the new coating penetrates the floor, it is carried out with fine or coarse roughing machines.
- Chemical Preparation: It is the activity that allows to make a better adhesion bridge of the surface so that the new coating penetrates the floor, the process aims to release grease, dirt, stuck paint, or other contaminant that prevents the normal adhesion of the coating, generally the floor is sealed by these agents and they do not allow any adhesion, it is done with chemical products that we manipulate with all precautions and personal safety items.
- Repairs or repairs: Before applying the coating and after having made the surface preparation (Mechanical, chemical or mixed), it is necessary to repair the imperfections of the floor such as cracks, gaps, joints, it is done with epoxy mortar putties, reinforcements, elastic materials between others.
- Application:Generally, the coatings are multilayer systems, a primer that may or may not have color and on top of it one or two more layers with color, depending on the design of the floor. You have to consider the climate, at very high temperatures, the material will dry very quickly, and at very low temperatures, the material will take a long time to dry, our professionals have the experience and know what to do to mitigate each case. In residential applications, after the first coat, granite simulation is pulled, followed by a clear coat.
